Tayo (or Tayao) is one of the most iconic and largest traditional Newari ethnic ornaments from Nepal. It is a ritualistic necklace primarily worn by Newar girls, brides, and women, as well as by significant deities such as the Living Goddess Kumari, Lokeshwor, and Yogini during special ceremonies and festivals.
This striking piece is a Muga Mala Tayo, a beautiful blend of traditional Newari symbolism and regal materials.
Design & Aesthetic Features
-
The Pendant (Tayo): This is a gold-toned, spindle-shaped pendant featuring the classic "lozenge" or hexagonal silhouette. It is intricately embellished with rows of shimmering clear stones and topped with a fan-like crown of red stone accents, which traditionally represent the protective Nagas (snake heads).
-
The Necklace (Muga Mala): Unlike the silver-toned version with a metal chain, this pendant is strung on a Muga Mala—a necklace made of deep, lustrous red beads that mimic traditional coral.
-
Aesthetic: The combination of the gold pendant against the rich red beads creates a high-contrast, royal look that is deeply rooted in Nepali bridal and ceremonial fashion.
Care Instructions
-

-
Keep Dry: Remove the set before showering, swimming, or heavy exercise to preserve the high-shine plating.
-
Storage: Store in an airtight jewellery box or a soft microfiber pouch to prevent oxidation and scratches.
-
Cleaning: Gently wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth after each wear to maintain its brilliance.
